Fourth of July Travel

Since I had to work this weekend, I couldn’t travel too far for the Fourth Of July holiday. And Pittsburgh being Pittsburgh (well, its location I mean), the options were limited but somehow I stumbled across the Stonewall Resort in West Virginia. It’s located within Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park and its outdoor setting can’t be beat. I had some qualms with the resort itself which I’ll write about in separate post. But on this little getaway I got to visit the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (a fascinating yet utterly creepy place), did a wine tasting at a local winery (I sampled one that truly tasted like a Tootsie Roll which for me was awesome), and just enjoyed beautiful weather and a serene setting. Hope everyone else had a Happy Fourth of July!

It is always nice to just get away sometimes. We bought a bottle of it and I can’t wait to crack it open! And I agree that gazing out at a body of water is always nice.

Sounds like you had a good 4th even if you didn’t stray too far. Sometimes there’s lots to do right in our own backyard that we forget about. Like visiting a vineyard or an asylum–that must have been creepy!

I definitely agree that our backyards have a ton of things and places worth exploring! The asylum was very creepy, especially imagining all the things that had gone on there.

You live in such a great part of the US that it looks like there are tons of fun day trips all around you, especially a lot of history in your neck of the woods. And, I’m still trying to figure out the wine that tastes like tootsie roll but it sure does sound good to me. Yum!

I just wish Pittsburgh was closer to the ocean and not so near to the Midwest πŸ™‚ I grew up in Philadelphia so I was spoiled with incredible history all around me! I can’t explain it, but liquid tootsie roll is what it so tasted like!

I could not have said it better! But yes, where the outdoors are involved, West Virginia rarely disappoints!
