I picked Hungary for this week’s fun facts in honor of my parents who are traveling there today where they will then embark on their Danube River cruise.
1.) The capital of Budapest is home to the Dohany Street Synagogue which is the largest synagogue in Europe and is also one of the largest in the world. It was constructed in the mid-19th century. It suffered damage during World War II but was restored to its former glory during the 1990s. The Hungarian Jewish museum is also located there.
2.) Hungary is a landlocked nation and is bordered by seven countries-Ukraine, Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, and Serbia.
3.) Goulash is Hungary’s most famous and often cooked dish outside of the country. Authentic goulash is a beef dish cooked with onions, Hungarian paprika powder, tomatoes, and green peppers. It’s considered a cross between a soup and a stew.
