Panama is definitely a country I want to visit (and was very close the two times I traveled to Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica as it is very near to the Panamanian border). I’m currently reading (albeit slowly and painfully at times, it is after all more than 600 pages) David McCullough’s book on the building of the canal, The Path Between the Sea. Between the canal, its rain forests, and its incredible beaches, I know Panama would suit me just fine.
-Ships traveling between New York and San Francisco save approximately 8,000 miles by using the Panama Canal instead of going around Cape Horn which is the southernmost tip of South America.
-In Panama, you can swim in the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean in the same day.
-Panama is considered one of the prime spots for bird watching as it is home to more birds than the United States and Canada combined.
