For my birthday this year my former piano teacher gave me a lovely book from his own personal collection. It’s of sketches by the famous French painter Maurice Utrillo of the Parisian quarter Montmartre. Utrillo specialized in cityscapes and is one of the few famous painters of Montmartre who was actually born there.
Minus the deluge of the sex shops and street hawkers that constantly harass you when you’re just trying to enjoy yourself, I love Montmartre. Its historical ambiance, windy streets, and the fact that one can just imagine Van Gogh, Monet and the others appearing at every corner make it magical for me.
