Museo Larco’s Collection of Erotic Ceramics

Museo Larco

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Museo Larco in the Peruvian capital of Lima contains some of the best pre-Colombian art in the world. It also features a rather “special” gallery, one that is located in a separate building from the main collection. One visit there and it’s easy to see why this is.

Indians in ancient India were known to “get down and dirty” thanks to a “relatively obscure” text by the name of The Kama Sutra, and yet the Moche civilization (they came long before the better known Inca), could get down and dirty themselves, they just did so on ceramics if you can believe it. And due to unique weather conditions in Peru, these ceramic pieces are also in immaculate condition. They’re thousands of years old but look like they were just produced a decade ago.

I’m not going to lie, I chalk it up to the somewhat prudish American in me, but I felt a tad naughty taking photographs of some of the pieces. It wasn’t as if I was the only one but many of the art works were definitely on the more explicit side. The ones I’ve included below I’d deem less “risque.”

All I have to say is that if you visit the Museo Larco, definitely plan to stop in the erotic gallery, just leave any young ones outside, that is unless you’re prepared to answer a never ending round of questions.

Ha! I’m laughing and quasi-cringing at the same time. I do know we Americans are a bit prudish, but it’s kind of a lot to put all of the erotic stuff in the same place. I remember going to a “Masculin” exhibit in Paris and you turned one corner and it was the “18 and over” section of men in all of their “masculinity.” Of course no one in Paris batted an eye!

I had read about the collection prior to visiting but it was still “whoa” once actually there walking through. It’s comical how prudish we are and how utterly carefree the Europeans are in regards to “that” stuff. I still remember when living in Spain all the nudity that was in commercials! I’m sure that exhibit was something you’ll never forget!

This is hysterical! My kind of museum (kidding…well, sort of). Seriously though, I would have been embarrassed to take photos too. Thanks for taking one for the team so that we can all have a good giggle!

No, I know exactly what you mean 🙂 Sometimes a good laugh or two is just what is needed when doing hardcore touring all day. The funny thing is these were the more “mild” photos…I hope you get to go in December so we can have a good cyber giggle together then!
