When it comes down to gifts, I (the majority of the time) would always prefer to travel somewhere instead. You can go out to the mall and pick something up anytime of the year but can you always jet off to an exotic locale? Or spend a week in one of Europe’s majestic capital cities? The answer is of course not.
For the past three years, we have always gone on a trip around President’s Day (here in the United States, it’s a federal holiday that remembers the lives of two of America’s most famous presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln). The holiday is always celebrated on the third Monday in February which places it only a few short days after the incredibly overly commercialized holiday of Valentine’s Day. While in years past, D and I did exchange gifts and dined out at restaurants with their “Valentine’s Day” menu (i.e. jacked up prices menu), we often celebrate Valentine’s Day either a few days early or a few days late (depending on when we go) during our February trip.
We had a meal I’ll never forget at Le Colonial, a fantastic French-Vietnamese restaurant in Chicago that felt like the next best thing to being in Hanoi’s French Quarter.
Then there was the year that we split a sloppy Jo-Nut (savory donut stuffed with coffee and cola braised beef and topped with barbecue sauce) at Cleveland’s Greenhouse Tavern.
And since I had to work last year on Valentine’s Day until 11 PM, we ended up celebrating the very next night at Washington D.C.’s Fogo de Chão, the best Brazilian steakhouse this side of the equator.
But I don’t think I could be any more excited than where I’ll be dining at tomorrow night…Palo, an adults only Italian restaurant on Disney’s Magic cruise ship. I am looking immensely forward to the entire cruise, but the food side of it might be what I’m excited for the most.
So yes, this weekend while much of the United States is again beset with horrible winter weather, I will be basking in sun, warm temperatures, and just the overall awesomeness that is a Disney cruise. I’ll be going off the Internet grid for the next few days but be sure to check back early next week for photos and recaps.
